A storage space is a convenient area to place your belongings that simply doesn’t fit in your home. However, not everything should be placed in your storage space rental without a first thought.

We list down some handy guide use storage space properly.

  1. Appliances.  Before storing appliances, make sure that it is thoroughly cleaned and dry. Refrigerators and freezers with moisture and dirt tend to stink up pretty badly. Wipe it thoroughly and make sure to dry it overnight. When in storage leave it slightly ajar to maintain its freshness. Items like toasters and ovens also likely have some crumbs leftover. This can attract rats and other unwanted critters so make sure you vacuum these appliances before storing. Storage spaces in Singapore have very clean facilities however you never know if the storage space of other people beside your storage is attracting these unwanted critters.
  2. Clothes.  When storing clothes make sure they are out of wardrobes and drawers. Place them in clean plastic boxes and place a mothballs or some naphthalene. This ensures that it won’t absorb the smell of your storage space.
  3. Electronics.  When keeping electronics it is best to keep it in their original box. It’s the perfect size and they most likely contain Styrofoam specifically for your electronics. This is to avoid any dust or spider webs from accumulating in the little sockets. Place cloth or plastic wrap along the top and bottom of the box to make sure that should an accident occur (leaky roof, flooding, etc.) it will remain safe.
  4. Furniture.  Furniture pieces that contain fabrics such as sofas or chairs have to be vacuumed to remove any food crumbs. Cover them with a clean cloth to avoid attracting dust and absorbing the smell of your entire storage space. Wardrobes and drawers should be emptied out to protect the shelves. Place mothballs to protect and maintain their condition.
  5. Glassware & Dishware.  Protecting glassware and dishware should be one of the top priorities in your storage unit. This is because these items can easily break and get stained. Protect fragile items by individually wrapping them in packing paper (using newspapers are not recommended as they can stain porcelain). Before putting in the box, make sure to insert some bubble wrap in the bottom of the box. If there are any gaps between the dishes or glasses make sure to fill it with crunched up packing paper ensuring that there is no space for dishes to move. Add in some more bubble wrap at the top of the box to secure the items.
  6. Toys.  Keep toys in clean plastic boxes to avoid any dust from accumulating in the toys. Remove any batteries to avoid any damage brought by from leaking batteries.

With these rules in mind, you can avoid the major faux pas when it comes to storage rentals. If you don’t have time or you simply don’t want to organise your stuff, there are professional packing services available in most storage rental for rent.
